Plaid Cymru’s Leanne Wood has urged people to select their favourite spot in the valleys as voting draws to an end in a major tourist drive.
As part of the Valleys Essentials initiative, Rough Guide author Mike Parker has nominated 50 of his favourite places in the valleys. The shortlist takes in everything from historic attractions such as Rhondda Heritage Park, to scenic walks in the Dare Valley Country Park and cosy countryside pubs such as the Brynffynon Hotel in Llanwonno.
People have until the end of the month to contribute to the debate by choosing their favourite place.
Leanne Wood, AM for the South Wales Central region which covers the Rhondda and Cynon valleys, praised the Valleys Essentials initiative during questions to Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones in the Senedd.
She said: “There is only one week left to cast your vote to find the most popular place on the Valleys Essentials shortlist and I would urge people to get involved.
“There is something for everyone on the list and there is a good chance that by having a browse on the website you may discover somewhere special nearby that you had no idea about.”
Ms Wood added: “This initiative is brilliant as it puts the spotlight on the many beautiful places we are lucky to have here in the South Wales valleys .
“The tourist industry is massive for Wales but a great majority of visitors head to the coastline. There is a lot of untapped tourist potential in the valleys due to our dramatic landscapes and rich heritage.
“I am hopeful that the Valleys Essentials initiative will help unlock this untapped potential.”
