Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Society to help raise awareness of dementia.

Wrexham AM Griffiths joined actress Ruth Jones MBE for the launch of the Dementia Friends programme and has pledged to support people with the condition.

Dementia Friends aims to give people in Wales a better understanding of dementia and the small things that they can do that could make a difference to people living with the condition.

Whether it’s helping someone with the disease in everyday life or spreading the word about dementia amongst friends and family, every action counts and can make a difference to the lives of the 45,500 people currently living with the condition in Wales.

With the help of Welsh Government funding, Alzheimer’s Society is running a year-long pilot of their Dementia Friends programme.

The charity hopes four thousand people will become Dementia Friends across Wales by 2015, helping raise awareness and creating a more dementia-friendly nation.

After attending the launch, Lesley Griffiths AM said:

“Research by the Alzheimer’s Society suggests one in three people over 65 will develop dementia.”

“With an aging population, there’s an ever increasing number of people living with the condition so it is vital to develop a greater knowledge and understanding.”

“The Dementia Friends initiative aims to improve public awareness of dementia and ultimately help end the stigma surrounding the condition.”

“By signing up to the Dementia Friends programme, I am pledging my support for people with the disease and I hope people in Wrexham will do the same.”
