Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George, has given his backing to a new service which will help new mothers in the Newtown area.
The Newtown Breastfeeding Support Group which launched today, is a team of eight mothers who have all breastfed or are currently breastfeeding their children and who have recently qualified as Breastfeeding Peer Counsellors with La Leche League. They offer support and information to pregnant ladies, new mums, long-term breastfeeding women or anyone interested in the subject.
Commenting Mr George said:
“I very much welcome the launch of this new information and support service in Newtown.
“We know there is strong medical evidence that breast feeding provides babies with the very best start in life and that there are additional positive benefits for mothers as well.
“However, we also know that it isn’t the easiest thing to achieve naturally; complications can occur and when they do mothers’ want the very best sources of help and advice to overcome those problems.
“I think this new mum-led support group will complement the work being done by NHS midwives and health visitors in the area and will provide new and expectant mothers with a valuable source of encouragement and practical advice.”
