Regional AM Suzy Davies has seen her recent debate in the Assembly get results, and she hopes it will continue to protect children and young people’s school travel.
Mrs Davies, the Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, held a debate which led to Transport Minister Edwina Hart vowing to look again at the law and policy surrounding school transport.
Mrs Davies said: “I am pleased to see that the Minister has listened to my questions and the points that were made and she has now written to all council’s to remind them of their obligations.
“Swansea Council has itself signed up to the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child and they must remember this. They can not simply ignore it when it suits them.”
Mrs Davies, who is a member of the Assembly’s Children and Young People’s Committee, added “I hope that Swansea Council will bear in mind the Minister’s comments to them that she expects them to carry out “meaningful” impact assessments for their proposals.
“I hope that Swansea Council provide evidence of the assessments that they have carried out, when they put forward their proposals to stop subsiding travel to faith schools, so that we can all see what due regard they have paid to various Articles in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child .”
