Commenting on the news that 123 jobs are under threat at the Orb Electrical Steelworks in Newport, William Graham AM, Shadow Minister for Business, said:

“Following last week’s news that another Newport steelworks has put its staff on temporary leave with half pay, this warning of job losses shows the precarious state of steelmaking in the city.

“Steelmaking is an important part of Newport’s industrial heritage and must be protected as an important part of the city’s skilled economy.

“I hope the company will enter into talks with the Welsh Government and others with a view to saving as many jobs as possible.

“This worrying news again highlights the fact that Wales is competing in a global race where our economy must be as competitive as possible to retain and create new jobs and make Wales a more prosperous nation.”

Mohammad Asghar, Assembly Member for South Wales East, added, “This must be a worrying time for the workers affected and their families and my thoughts are with them.

“I hope that every possible support will be offered to help secure these highly skilled jobs.”
