An Accident is Waiting o Happen at Caersws Bridge, Claims AM

Russell_GeorgeThe safety of pedestrians and cyclists using Caersws bridge is being put at risk as the Welsh Government “considers” whether to commission a report into options for crossing the bridge, says Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George.

Mr George will next week meet representatives of a community group from the village pressing for action to make crossing the road bridge safe. They fear lives are being put at risk on the bridge which the main A470 trunk road passes over.

“Crossing Caersws bridge by foot, bicycle or even in a car is like taking your life into your own hands at times,” said Mr George.

“There is no pavement or road markings , forcing vehicles to come within inches of people trying to cross by foot to the Recreation Ground or back into the village.

“There are also numerous near misses and accidents between vehicles using the bridge as well as cyclists due to the narrow width of the road.”

Mr George wrote to Transport Minister Edwina Hart AM pushing her department to look into options to make crossing the bridge safer.

In an answer to a question tabled by Mr George, she said: “I am considering commissioning a report on potential options for pedestrians and cyclists at Caersws bridge.”

“We need a decision and action on the situation. This is a major trunk road serving North, Mid and South Wales. We need action to secure the safety of road users would be a top priority,” added Mr George.

He will meet representatives from the village next week to discuss the situation.
