Responding to the reported announcement from Stena Line that they are to suspend their fast ferry service provided on the HSS Stena Explorer between Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire over the winter period, local AM for Ynys Môn, Ieuan Wyn Jones said:
“I am of course extremely disappointed by this news. Jobs are vital in the current economic climate and anything that threatens jobs in Holyhead and Anglesey is a major concern for me. I very much hope that this is only a short-term measure but in the meantime I have already written to Stena urging them to make every effort to minimise the numbers of compulsory redundancies. We can’t afford to lose jobs on Anglesey.
“Unfortunately, successive UK Governments have utterly failed so far to tackle the ever-rising price of oil and this is the inevitable result of spiralling fuel costs faced by operators. I hope that Stena will look again at the profitability of the route if and when fuel prices stabilise or start to come down.”
