Bonfire Night is fast approaching and Denbighshire is urging pet owners to spare a thought for their animals on November 5.
Whilst most people will attend organised displays throughout Denbighshire, many may also decide to hold their own too. You should always remember, however, that whilst fireworks are fun for us, they’re definitely no fun for animals.
Denbighshire can provide advice on how to minimize the distress caused to your pet when fireworks are let off.
Pets simply don’t understand what’s going on when fireworks are going off around them and many are really disturbed by the whole process. Most animals get very scared by the lights, and because of their sensitive hearing, loud noises can actually cause them pain.
Members of the public should bear this mind if thinking about holding a firework display. More detailed animal care advice and information is available from the County Council on 01824 706086.
Here are a few tips to help minimize the distress caused to your pet when fireworks are being let off.
- Try to bring hutches and cages for small pets inside.
- Move your animals to the quietest part of you property or, if possible, move them to a quieter location altogether
- Walk dogs early in the day and make sure cats are in the house.
- Make sure your animals can’t escape from the house if they become distressed
- Provide a safe and secure environment with bedding, toys etc. Draw the curtains and put the TV or radio on.
- Try to stable horses to stop them bolting
- Please do not forget wildlife, if you are having a firework party with a bonfire, build the bonfire as late as possible and check that no animals, such as hedgehogs, have made their homes in the bonfire.
