Labour AM for the Vale of Clwyd, has welcomed a new funding package of more than a million pounds to develop play opportunities for children across Wales.
Mrs Jones said:
“We are continuing to invest in our children and young people across Wales. Play can form an important part of a child’s development as it allows them to interact with others and develop their imagination, which is an important part of the English curriculum”.
The Welsh Labour Government has made £1.25 million available for local authorities to use for a number of measures, including improving play areas with equipment such as rope swings and timber frame structures. It will also help buy portable play equipment for children living in disadvantaged communities, improve access for disabled children to take part in play opportunities, improve lighting in play areas and encourage street play.
Thanks to Welsh Labour, Wales was the first country in the UK to adopt the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Article 31 of the charter says children have the right to relax and play. Play is an important part of children’s lives, benefiting their health, happiness, well-being and laying the foundations for reaching their full potential as adults.
