Annual Awards recognise NPT sporting talent

The search is on for the sporting stars of Neath Port Talbot.

Now in its 11th year, the Annual Physical Activity & Sport Awards are open for nominations in eight categories. The event is run by the Neath Port Talbot District Council in conjunction with Neath Port Talbot Council.

The Council’s Physical Activity & Sport Service (PASS) development officer, Derek Jones, said, “The success of the sporting awards is dependent on receiving sufficient nominations of individuals and teams in the various categories.

“It is frustrating to be informed that a nomination was not submitted because clubs and groups hold back nominations mistakenly thinking their achievements are not high enough.

“The awards are meant not only to honour elite sports men and women but to recognize those unsung heroes that work tirelessly for their chosen activity, the message is simple send your nominations in.”

The nine categories are:
1: Young Sports person of the Year.
2:  Adult Sports Person of the Year.
3:  5 x 60 Club Team of the Year.
4:  Contribution to Physical Activity.
5:  Sports Coach of the Year.
6: Young Sports Team of the Year
7: Senior Sports Team of the Year.
8: Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr Jones, added, “The awards evening has become the premier event on the area’s sporting calendar launched 10 years ago. Past winners include, James Hook, Adam & Duncan Jones, Robert Jones (Rugby), Aberavon Surf Lifesaving Club (Surf Lifesaving) and Ritchie Noblett (Karate).”

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Ali Thomas, said, “There is a wealth of sporting talent in the county borough and this award ceremony identifies and rewards the hard work, dedication and commitment that clubs, individuals and volunteers thoroughly deserve.”
