Annual village tour raises valuable funds for the NSPCC

A team of dedicated fundraisers from Gwent led by local businessmen Richard Jones and Richard Satherley from Rogerstone took to the streets this summer on a giant village to village tour. The event was held in aid of the NSPCC  and raised over £4000 for the children’s charity.

The walkers started their five mile route in Rhiwderin, travelling through Bassaleg and finishing in Rogerstone, stopping off at local pubs along the way.

Richard, who lives in Rogerstone, said: “The main factors for deciding on our charity every year is that it benefits children and that the funds we raise are distributed either locally or more widely across Wales and we always try to choose a different charity each time

“We’ve been doing this event since 2006 and in aid of a charity since 2007 and have raised over £10,000 for different charities during that time, We aim to raise more money and make the event bigger every year.”

Around 70 people took part in the challenge this year. Most were local volunteers associated with the Rogerstone and Bassaleg Social Club and ranged in age from 18 to 67 years.

The money raised will help the NSPCC carry on its vital work with children, young people and families through local services as well as its national helplines – ChildLine for young people and the NSPCC Helpline for concerned adults.

Local NSPCC fundraiser Jo Leonard congratulated the team on their achievement. She said: “We’re thrilled the team chose the NSPCC to benefit from this year’s village tour. The money raised really will make a difference in helping to improve the lives of vulnerable children and young people within Wales.
