At 6.15pm yesterday evening (Thursday 18th March), Gwent Police received a call from the ambulance service reporting that a baby had been found abandoned at the rear of the Spar store on Newport Road, Cwmcarn.
Officers immediately attended the scene where they discovered a newborn baby boy wrapped in a towel. The baby was transferred by ambulance to the Royal Gwent Hospital. On arrival, the baby was pronounced deceased.
Gwent Police is appealing for information to locate the mother of the baby and any potential witnesses who may have been in the vicinity of the Spar store today and seen anything that may assist in the enquiry.
Superintendent for Caerphilly Local Policing Unit, Jon Burley said:
“We are extremely concerned about the health and well-being of the mother of the baby and appealing for her to come forward to receive any medical treatment she may require.
This is a tragic incident which will sadden the local community and our priority at the moment is finding the mother of the baby. I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area of the Spar store this morning or this afternoon who may be able to offer any information that could assist our enquiries to contact us immediately.”
Police would also ask anyone with concerns about somebody they know, a friend or member of their family who they think could possibly be connected to this incident to contact them as soon as possible.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwent Police on 101.
