Are your Christmas decorations safe to use?

Trading Standards in the Vale of Glamorgan are offering residents the chance to have their electrical Christmas decorations tested for free to make sure their festive celebrations don’t go off with too much of a bang!

An expert will be on hand between 9am and 5pm on Thursday 18 November in the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Civic Offices in Barry to test decorations and answer any questions you might have about their safe use. They’ll also be able to carry out small repairs, if needed, for free.

You can either wait for your decorations to be looked at or if you want to drop them off first thing in the morning we’ll give you a call when they’re ready.

Remember, to carry out a test of your electrical decoration we will need all the parts including any leads, transformers or plugs. All items will be tested on a first come, first served basis.

An indication from our expert tester suggests up to 50 per cent of electrical decorations may be unsafe. Christmas tree lights can pose a risk of fire, especially if the wires have been damaged or have been stored in places like attics, garages and sheds.
