Art experts at Swansea’s Glynn Vivian Art Gallery have helped students with severe learning difficulties to develop their creative skills.
Over 20 students from the Fforestfach Day Service have received certificates after completing a five-month course at the Alexandra Road attraction.
The course was led by Glynn Vivian Learning Assistant Tom Goddard and saw students recreating some of the works on display in sketches and paintings.
They focussed on both the permanent collection and touring exhibitions and developed their skills and understanding of art as a result of the fortnightly programme.
Tom said: “It’s astounding to see what the students have achieved. Every week they learn more and more and the work they’ve produced is excellent. It’s massively encouraging to see how their confidence has developed with time.
“The students have gained a real sense of achievement and I’m very proud of what each and every one of them has been able to accomplish.
“We hope this goes to show what everyone can achieve here at the Gallery and hope that our education programmes continue to flourish in 2010.”
Sheila O’Sullivan, Swansea Council Day Service Officer, said: “The classes were absolutely brilliant.
“Everybody who participated really enjoyed and learned a great deal from the experience.”
Saturday art classes for children and adults have now been introduced at the Glynn Vivian as well as holiday craft workshops to try to get all ages and abilities involved in art.
Free art books for children are also now available at the attraction.
