Artists donate work to fight homelessness

More than 70 pieces of original work by Welsh artists will go under the hammer in two charity art auctions next week.

The Shelter Cymru auctions have become a popular fixture of the Welsh arts scene with an eclectic mix of established figures such as Gareth Parry, William Selwyn, Helen Sinclair and Mike Jones donating work alongside new up and coming artists.

This year, a record 54 artists have contributed 72 pieces and organisers are hoping this will help them  match the £27,000 raised by last year’s auctions.

Shelter Cymru’s fundraising manager Andrew Jones said: “As always, the quality of the work is outstanding and we are hugely grateful to all the artists who donate so generously to support our work.

“Whether you are looking for an investment piece or just something for the living room wall, our auctions have something to match most tastes and budgets.

“These difficult economic times mean that our advisers are busier than ever so events like the art auctions are essential to ensuring that our services remain available to anyone in housing need.

“Last year, we helped nearly 15,500 people across Wales and prevented homelessness in 90 per cent of cases where it was threatened, and it looks like this year is just as busy.”

The auctions take place on 26 September at the Royal Cambrian Academy, Conwy, and 30 September at the Washington Gallery, Penarth.

All the art is available to view on Shelter Cymru’s website www.sheltercymru.org.uk

Entry to the events is via a bidding ticket available free from Shelter Cymru.
