They are now into the third year of their Artists in Residency programme at Aberystwyth Arts Centre which has proven to be an outstanding success. Below is information about their current artists who are now half way through their residency.
If you wanted any further information on the programme, or have an interest in meeting one of our artists, please do not hesitate to contact them. Towards the end of November there will be an Open Studio event which is a great opportunity to meet the artists and talk about the work they have produced during their time here. We will keep you posted on dates and times for this.

Matthew Cowan:
My current practice is in the realm of traditional British and European customs. I make works that are videos, sculpture, installations and performances, which play with the inherent strangeness of the continued popularity of long established folk customs in a modern world.
Many of my works can be viewed as mock folk performances in themselves, playing with the elements of folk rituals that give people a link to the past. In contemporary European societies, people have a peculiar relationship with their folk traditions that is part uneasiness about their past, and part fascination with humour, spectacle and long established ritual.
Petri Virtanen:
Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by very strong visual and sonic impulses; I loved comic-books and movies, mainly horror, fantasy, science-fiction, western, all kinds of good action. Then I got into painting, photography, videos, and drifted more towards the so called `art world´.
My photography exhibitions so far have been mostly staged horror photos, full of surrealistic twists and turns. I usually discuss the ideas with the models, think of the props, make-ups, locations, and we try to make a good drama-filled performance together!
