Creative kids have been using their artistic skills to help a toy store raise £2,000 for a children’s charity.
Children visiting the Early Learning Centre in The Quadrant Shopping Centre in Swansea have been making full use of an arts and crafts table set up in store to raise money for Save The Children, which campaigns to improve children’s lives all over the world.
For a small and voluntary donation, little visitors to the store have been encouraged to make their own cards, draw their Granny a picture or decorate a paper plate as part of a fun fundraising drive organised by store manager and mother-of-three Vicky Davies.
Vicky who is from Gorseinon, Swansea, and has worked at the store for three and a half years, said: “The Mothercare group, which includes the Early Learning Centre, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and wants to raise £1.75m over three years for Save The Children and each store in the group has been asked to raise £2,000.
“We started the arts and craft table about a month ago and it has been really popular. It is lovely to see them sitting down and getting stuck in to their drawings or decorating their paper plates.
“It is nice to think of children helping other children. It is lovely to think that children in Swansea are doing their bit to help children all over the world who may not be as fortunate as they are.”
There has been a steady flow of donations since the table was put up and so far it has raised close to £100, but it is not the only activity which the store is organising to reach their lofty £2,000 target.
To celebrate the upcoming royal nuptials, the Early Learning Centre has launched a special limited edition royal wedding figure set from its Happy Land range.
This much sought after toy set, which includes the happy couple, a royal carriage, the Queen and her corgi, has already sold out in the Quadrant Centre store but Vicky has one set left to raffle in aid of Save The Children.
Vicky said: “I have it under lock and key at the moment ready to be raffled. It is such a cute set, especially the Queen with her corgi, and it has been very popular. We sold out very quickly but I am hoping we will get some more in store soon.”
From next month, Vicky will be selling raffle tickets in store with the winner being picked shortly before the royal wedding on April 29.
Quadrant Centre Manager Alan Wallace said: “It’s been great to see the children enjoying the arts and crafts.
“There always seems to be a bunch of them gathered round the table colouring away so they’re having lots of fun and raising money for a good cause at the same time.”
