Mohammad Asghar, National Assembly Member for South Wales East, has expressed his disappointment at new figures which suggest that streets in Blaenau Gwent have the lowest cleanliness rating in Wales.
The ‘How Clean are our Streets?’ survey, undertaken by staff from Keep Wales Tidy, shows that Blaenau Gwent has a cleanliness index of 63.6 – the lowest of any local authority in Wales.
Blaenau Gwent’s streets also had the lowest cleanliness rating in Wales in 2008/2009.
Mr Asghar said: “Pride in our local communities is essential and it is very disappointing to see Blaenau Gwent finishing bottom of the table in Wales once again.
“It is crucial that the local authority and the Assembly Government take this very seriously.
“The figures show that Blaenau Gwent also has the highest percentage of smoking related litter in Wales.
“The Welsh Conservatives are committed to increasing penalties for environmental crimes, including littering”.
