National Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar has called on the Assembly Government to do everything it can to ensure as many nations as possible look to base their pre-games training for London 2012 in Wales.
Speaking in the Senedd, the South Wales East AM said: “I welcome the fact that a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the full Paralympic teams from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
“I hope that other teams will look to utilise the 31 Olympic-standard training sites we have in Wales.”
The Shadow Minister for Equality requested an update on the “on-going discussions with the Irish triathlon team, the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic team and the US Paralympic track cycling team”.
In an answer to a Written Assembly Question, the Minister had revealed to Mr Asghar that those teams were in advanced discussions with a view to potentially basing their training camps in Wales.
Mr Asghar also requested news on “the other Olympic and Paralympic committees that have visited Wales and are yet to make their decision”.
