Commenting on figures showing that 1.3% of people in Wales define their sexual identity as gay/lesbian/bisexual, well below official estimates, Mohammad Asghar AM, Shadow Minister for Equalities said:
“These figures show that a much lower proportion of people in Wales are defining themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, compared to official estimates.
“While Wales is widely perceived as a fair and tolerant society, these figures suggest that fear of discrimination and prejudice based on sexual identity remains a problem in many Welsh communities.
“More needs to be done to ensure that Wales can become a fairer society where everyone has the opportunity to succeed regardless of their age, gender or sexual orientation.”
