The First Minister has been boasting that his Welsh Labour Government is working to attract an NFL game to Wales, but it has been revealed that he has not had a single meeting about it.
Shadow Sports Minister, Mohammad Asghar, who uncovered the revelation, expressed disappointment at the First Minister’s mixed messages.
Mr Asghar said: “The First Minister is responsible for major events. Therefore, he should be at the forefront of discussions to bring landmark events – like an NFL match – to Wales.
“I’m amazed to learn that he has personally held no meetings during this Assembly on the matter, even though this event could have great economic benefits for Wales.
“A senior delegation from the NFL visited Cardiff at the end of November – but it was officials, and not the First Minister himself, holding the talks.
“The First Minister has spoken at length about the US-based contacts he developed during the Ryder Cup, so he should be leading the discussions to bring an NFL event to Wales”.
The South Wales East AM added: “The First Minister’s inaction is remarkable. Earlier this year, he also told me that he has held no Fourth Assembly meetings focussed on how Wales can benefit from hosting the very first event 2012 Olympic event.
“He also claimed that bringing a Champions League final to Wales was his ‘next sporting priority’ – yet there is not one word about any bid in the Programme for Government”.
