Welsh Conservatives have called for measures to help brand Wales as a world-class destination for tourism, culture and business.
Speaking in a Welsh Conservative-led debate, Mohammad Asghar AM, Shadow Minister for Heritage, confirmed support for a Welsh National Archive amongst other initiatives to enrich the cultural heritage of Wales.
Mohammad Asghar AM said, “While Wales has a diverse and proud cultural heritage, we are concerned that not enough is being done to market Wales to potential business investors and tourists.
“Visit Britain recently found that Welsh castles are the top tourist attraction in the UK, yet the Assembly Government is failing to make the most of them and other major Welsh heritage sites.
“Wales needs an integrated marketing strategy, which would broaden the appeal of our nation to tourists both in the UK and around the world.
“A Welsh National Archive would help capitalise on renewed interest in genealogy and related tourism, especially in the aftermath of the 2011 Census.
“We need a twin-track approach, which will also market Wales to potential investors, encouraging entrepreneurs of the benefits of coming to Wales to invest and create new jobs.
“Wales is a proud and culturally rich nation. We now need an Assembly Government with the confidence in Wales to market our nation effectively around the world.”
