Welsh Conservatives will highlight an urgent need to build upon the success of recent major sporting events in Wales during an Opposition Debate in the Assembly yesterday.
The group will call on WAG to support Welsh bids for the Commonwealth Games and a UEFA Champions League Final.
Shadow Minister for Heritage, Mohammad Asghar AM, said: “Right now, we’re at a real sporting crossroads in Wales.
“The last few years have obviously seen some great successes. The Ashes Test Match and the Ryder Cup are two excellent examples of that. Now we need to properly look to the future and get our sporting strategy right.
“Welsh Conservatives believe Wales should be marketed in an integrated way, as a world-class sports venue, a nation of culture and a place to do business.
“We have always made clear our support for a Commonwealth Games bid, and with UEFA regulations being changed this season, we also want a determined bid for a Champions League Final.
“WAG needs to listen to complaints that its support for major events is too slow and too bureaucratic, and it needs to work with individuals and groups to bring major events to Wales. It also needs to work closely with councils, transport operators and sports organisations to ensure transport arrangements and facilities are up to scratch.
“What we do now will define our success in hosting sports events for many years to come. We need to make sure we get it right.”
