Shadow Minister for Equality Mohammad Asghar has highlighted his disappointment that issues linked to the state of school toilets once again featured in the Children’s Commissioner for Wales’ Annual report.
Speaking before a debate on Tuesday, Mr Asghar said: “Keith Towler is absolutely right to note that it is simply not good enough that some children in schools are using toilets without seats or doors on the cubicles. Such problems can impact upon a child’s entire school experience”.
He later told the Senedd: “In our efforts to implement equality, children must be afforded basic dignity and respect, but clearly, those are still lacking in many areas. It is very worrying that Mr Towler highlights a gap between policy intent and practice on this issue”.
He also said: “It is fundamental that we do all that we can to recognise fully the rights of children and young people in Wales. Appreciating and protecting children’s rights crosses party lines”.
