National Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar has offered his support to campaigners in Chepstow aiming to save the local air training squadron.
The Air Cadet Organisation is planning to disband the squadron in September because the headquarters in Lower Church Street has a damaged roof. The group will instead be merged with the Caldicot squadron.
Mr Asghar, who represents South Wales East, has voiced his support to local campaigners and has sent a letter to Downing Street in the hope of securing further support.
He said: “The squadron has a proud history in Chepstow and provides a vital service to younger people.
“Air training squadrons like the one in Chepstow provide young people with training and qualities which can prove so important in later life and also give local people the opportunity to foster an interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force.
“Local residents have proposed that the community could take ownership of the Lower Church Street building and raise money for the necessary repairs themselves.
“I think this is an excellent example of the “big society” idea with individuals and communities taking more control over their own destiny”.
