Asghar: WAG fails to support calls for Commonwealth Games & Champions League bids

Mohammad Asghar, Shadow Minister for Heritage, has expressed confusion at the Welsh Assembly Government’s decision to vote down a Welsh Conservative Motion in the Senedd on Wednesday.

The Welsh Conservative Group proposed a Motion which included a call on the Assembly Government to “support Welsh bids for the Commonwealth Games and a UEFA European club cup final”.

However, the Assembly Government refused to back the Motion – instead voting in favour of an amended Motion which contained no reference to these particular major sporting events.

Mr Asghar said: “Following the Ryder Cup, the First Minister said that bringing a UEFA Champions League final to the Millennium Stadium was his next objective, whilst Plaid Cymru supposedly wants to bring a Champions League final here too.

Cardiff Council has expressed interest in bringing the Commonwealth Games to the Welsh capital and apparently the Assembly Government has discussed the feasibility of such a bid and talks are ongoing.

“For these reasons, I’m mystified at the hypocrisy of the Labour-Plaid Assembly Government in voting down our motion”.

The South Wales East AM continued: “Bids for a UEFA European club cup final, preferably the Champions League, and the Commonwealth Games could do great things for the nation.

“The Assembly Government showed a lack of ambition in failing to support our call for bids on Wednesday afternoon.

“Welsh Conservatives are committed to enriching the heritage of Wales by prioritising culture, sport and tourism. We feel bidding to host the Commonwealth Games and a UEFA Champions League Final will play a major part in that process”.
