Mohammad Asghar AM has expressed concern that no discussions took place between Welsh Government officials and the England and Wales Cricket Board regarding the decision to move the 2012 Test Match against the West Indies away from the Swalec Stadium.
The ECB took the decision to move the five-day match after Glamorgan County Cricket Club informed them that it would be late in making a staging fee payment for a hosting a Test Match against Sri Lanka.
In a written question to the First Minister, Carwyn Jones has revealed that “no discussions” took place between Welsh Government officials and the ECB regarding the decision.
Mr Asghar, Shadow Minister for Equalities & Sport, said: “I am shocked to learn that the Welsh Government made no contact with the ECB.
“The loss of the West Indies Test Match was a real blow and will negatively impact upon tourism to South Wales next year.
“The Welsh Government should have been lobbying hard and working with Glamorgan CCC and the ECB to reach a solution.
“We hear claims from the Welsh Government that they are committed to bringing future major events to Wales – but it seems they did absolutely nothing to prevent the capital city of Wales losing a huge sporting event in the West Indies Test Match”.
