An awards ceremony has been held at County Hall, Mold, to recognise the success of Flintshire County Council’s Specialist Schools Programme and the Street Lighting Team, who have both recently been finalists at national awards.
Flintshire Specialist Schools Programme achieved Finalist status at the 2010 Excellence Awards. They were recognised in the Our Services category for delivering high quality, citizen-centred services.
Working in partnership with a range of stakeholders, the Council has developed world-class high quality, modern facilities at primary school Ysgol Pen Coch and high school Ysgol Maes Hyfryd in Flint for children and young people with additional learning needs.
The new schools are making a significant difference to pupils’ learning and achievements. Pupils, parents, governors, staff, health services and local communities were involved through every stage of the schools’ development. Headteachers played a significant part in the building design and pupils regularly visited the building sites to witness the creation of their new schools.
The new schools meet the Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy for developing schools fit for the 21st Century.
The Council’s Street Lighting Team has also been recognised for the success the Council has achieved in making the county’s street lighting more energy efficient, whilst still being effective and safe. The Team were finalists in the Best service team: Highways, winter maintenance & street lighting category of the 2010 APSE Service Awards.
Flintshire County Council Chairman, Cllr Owen Thomas, who re-presented the awards before a meeting of the County Council, said:
“Many congratulations to all those involved with the Flintshire Specialist Schools Programme and the Street lighting team. It’s always a pleasure to recognise the success of hard work and achievement.”
