Cardiff Castle returns to the Victorian heyday on Saturday 12 September with a special event to highlight the enormous influence the Victorians had on the development of the castle.
Characters from history will be strolling the grounds, including Lord Bute and genius architect, William Burges, who will be discussing their grand plans to transform Cardiff Castle into a Welsh Victorian Camelot. Below stairs, maids and butlers will be busy ensuring the smooth running of the Bute household, with meticulous attention to detail.
Don’t be surprised if you even come face to face with Queen Victoria herself, or more everyday characters such as Jack Black the royal rat catcher, and a man on his penny farthing.
All in all, the Victorian Day at Cardiff Castle promises to be a very civilised day out, with Victorian parlour games for children, a Magic Lantern show (limited places), croquet on the lawn and brass band music. Entry is free if you come in costume yourself, plus there will be a prize for the best adult and child’s outfit.
Normal admission applies to the Castle, but there is a special events ticket available if visitors just want to stroll around the grounds during Victorian Day. Remember, if you have a Cardiff Castle Pass, the event will be free.
