The Donkey Lane site after the work was completed
An area of Bangor which has been blighted by fly-tipping and other environmental crimes has been given a makeover by the Bangor Pride community group, supported by Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns scheme.
The land is near the Ffriddoedd area of the city, known locally as Donkey Lane, has been cleaned by Bangor Pride partners including Gwynedd Council, Fly-tipping Action Wales, North Wales Police, Keep Wales Tidy and pupils and teachers from Ysgol Tryfan.
Thanks to this major clean up operation, tonnes of fly-tipped waste including garden waste, old fridges, washing machines, TVs and mattresses have all been removed from the site, along with over 130 tyres. Non-native plants such as Bamboo and Laurel have also been removed.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Environment Portfolio Leader, said:
“The people of Gwynedd tell us they want clean and tidy communities and by working together we can all live in neighbourhoods that we can be proud of. I would urge the people of Gwynedd to respect each other and their environment and to dispose of their rubbish in a safe and legal manner.”
Councillor John Wynn Jones, Chairman of Bangor Pride added:
“The clearance of Donkey Lane has been a great success and we now hope the site will once again be a valued asset that the whole community can enjoy. The local neighbourhood therefore have a vital role to play in keeping the site in this condition and it is now up to everyone to ensure that the site is not blighted by further fly-tipping.”
Anthony Randles, Fly-tipping Action Wales’ North Wales Project Co-ordinator, noted:
“We are very pleased to have been involved in this clean-up operation at Donkey Lane. It is encouraging to see the community involved in helping to improve their environment.
“To make the most of this work, it is vital this area remains waste free in future. I would encourage householders to use the local facilities provided and to report any suspicious waste disposal activity.”
