Mold Craft Circle joined visual artist, Ben Davies, in completing some exquisite fabric banners for the Spirits of Dragons event being held at Flint Castle on 23 June 2012. These banners will be used for an epic and spectacular performance where a wide variety of artistic skills will bring to life the history, magic, myth and mystery surrounding this ancient site.
Alison Loverick and Pauline Begley, both from the Iceland head office marketing department who sponsored the banner making workshops, as well as contributing to the final performance, attended the final workshop and were thrilled with the quality of work produced by the Mold Craft Circle and Ben.
The performance will include the banners as well as enormous dragons and giants which will be the characters in a larger theatrical cast representing ages of defenders and protagonists, both real and mythical, in battle for possession of the Castle. The banners and other props being developed by Flintshire community groups, schools and volunteers will be part of a performance emphasising the endurance and indomitable Spirit of Wales; the importance of Welsh artistic and cultural legacy; and the value of international understanding and integration.
Flintshire County Council’s Arts, Culture and Events team arranged this workshop as part of their programme for Flintshire’s Cultural Olympiad involvement through the Welsh Cauldrons and Furnaces project. The Mold Craft Circle is only one of the local community groups who, together with hundreds of Flintshire’s young people, are preparing for this performance which will celebrate the Olympics coming to the UK.
