Aspiring Andy Murray’s from Gilfach Fargoed Primary School were treated to a day full of Tennis on Friday 20th June, to celebrate the beginning of Wimbledon on Monday 23rd June.
The entire school took part in a festival of tennis, learning skills and playing games supported by Sport Caerphilly Officers, who provided equipment and Gilfach Tennis Club, who allowed the children to use the Tennis courts for the day.
Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, commented, “This is a great example of our Sport and Leisure Team working in partnership with schools and with community clubs to provide excellent sporting opportunities to the young people living in our borough and develop an air of excitement around the huge British sporting event that is Wimbledon. I hope the whole school enjoyed the day and continue to play Tennis throughout the summer.”
Mrs Christine Lewis, Head teacher at Gilfach Fargoed Primary School, added, “I am very proud of all the pupils at Gilfach Fargoed Primary School. All pupils from Nursery to Year 6 participated. Without the support of the Friends of the School Association who organised this event in conjunction with Sport Caerphilly Officers and Gilfach Tennis Club this fantastic event would not have taken place.”
Sport Caerphilly Officers will also be encouraging pupils from Ysgol Cwm Rhymni, in Fleur de Lys to take part in lunchtime Tennis taster sessions next week to celebrate the beginning of Wimbledon. The sessions are part of National School Sport Week, organised by the Youth Sport Trust to encourage school children across Britain to take part in sport.
