Bates: Closure of Wrexham and Shropshire railway a great loss to Mid Wales

Assembly Member Mick Bates has expressed his disappointment following the news that the Wrexham and Shropshire railway will cease operations on January 28th 2011.

A statement from the firm said: ‘The organisation cited the unprecedented economic environment as a contributing factor and although the company has strived to increase passenger numbers, it has been determined that the business has no prospect of reaching profitability.  Wrexham & Shropshire is not insolvent nor is it being placed in administration and all outstanding financial commitments will be met.  Alternative employment opportunities within the railway industry are being sought for the 55 employees, and all staff wages and full redundancy entitlements will be paid.’

Commenting, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates said:

“This is very disappointing news and I am saddened at the loss of the service and the associated job losses.  The Wrexham and Shropshire railway provided a quality service into London, with attentive staff, great food and comfortable carriages.

“Deutsche Bahn only acquired this service in 2008 and already they have abandoned it because profit margins weren’t big enough.  In doing so they are slashing a very valuable service that was appreciated and enjoyed by many people from Mid Wales.

“I do welcome the fact that Wrexham & Shropshire investigated all possible alternatives before making this announcement, including possible efficiency savings through a synergy with Arriva Trains, also owned by Deutsche Bahn.  However, this is a sad day for rail passengers in Mid Wales.

“I hope that the Welsh Government will work with the company to minimise the impact of this decision on the staff and offer any support possible as they try to find alternative employment within the railway industry.”
