Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has welcomed news from the Minister for Transport that progress is underway for road improvements on the A487 at Glandyfi.
In answer to a letter from Mr Bates on the A487 Glandyfi bends, the Minister for Transport Ieuan Wyn Jones confirmed that the Welsh Government “will shortly be awarding the contract to improve the A487 between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. The work involves approximately 1.3 kilometres of trunk road to current standards and includes the provision of pedestrian/cycleway facilities by widening and realigning the existing carriageway. Work is scheduled for completion late 2012.”
Commenting, Assembly Member Mick Bates said:
“Following the recent flooding the road by Glandyfi was closed and all traffic diverted along the most unsuitable unclassified road network, so progress cannot come soon enough.
“The lanes by Glandyfi are too narrow for large vehicles and can delay access to services in Aberystwyth, such as Bronglais Hospital, which is unacceptable. Local residents have worked hard to raise safety concerns over this stretch of road for some thirty years. I hope that widening the existing carriageway will improve safety along this stretch.
“The Minister has also confirmed that officials are investigating options for reducing the likelihood of flooding on the A487, south of Derwenlas, which is very welcome. I hope that the improvements will prevent future closure of the road network due to flooding and I look forward to work getting underway.”
