Staff from Denbighshire County Council have been out and about battling heavy snow and drifting conditions to try and clear the county’s roads during today (Wednesday)
Teams have been battling to keep the road network open, in particular higher routes in the county. The problems were caused by a mix of heavy snow and strong gusty winds that have resulted in drifting in many areas.
All main roads in the county are passable with care, with the exception of the A5104 between Llandegla and Bryneglwys and the A542 Horseshoe Pass between Llandegla and Llangollen. JCBs have been busy working on the A5104 throughout the day trying to clear drifts, to allow the council’s snow ploughs to widen the section of road.
The worst of the snow in Denbighshire seems to have affected the Llangollen area. The council’s efforts were hampered by incidents on the main A5 arterial route in the Dee Valley. Additional contractors were deployed in the town centre during the day, as council vehicles attempted to clear the A5.
Tractor ploughs have also been busy clearing side roads in an area from Llanelidan to Corwen.
Iwan Prys-Jones, Corporate Director -Environment, said: “Our teams really have battled the elements today, working in difficult weather conditions. Heavy snow overnight and into the morning, coupled with the snow already lying on the ground, have made it a tremendous challenge for the council to keep the roads as clear as possible during the day.
“I would like to commend the teams of staff that have worked in very difficult circumstances to keep roads clear between communities. The prolonged cold winter spell has place tremendous pressure on the teams who have worked around the clock on many occasions to keep highways open. But they have carried out their duties with professionalism and commitment.”
