Details of this year’s BBC Proms – the world’s largest classical music festival – were revealed today, and included details of major performances by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
The Orchestra will perform five Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2010, including the two Doctor Who Proms, hosted by Matt Smith (the Doctor) and Karen Gillan (new companion Amy Pond).
BBC National Orchestra of Wales already perform and record the soundtracks for the BBC Cymru Wales series and will be recreating live the music that has been the backdrop to the Time Lord’s travels on television.
Matt Smith and Karen Gillan host an intergalactic musical adventure to include Murray Gold’s music from the BBC Wales Doctor Who Series plus a selection of classical favourites.
The Doctor Who Proms take place on Saturday 24 July at 7.30p.m. and Sunday 25 July at 11.am and are conducted by Ben Foster and Wales’ own Grant Llewellyn. BBC National Orchestra of Wales is joined by the voices of London Philharmonic Choir.
The first Doctor Who Prom took place in the 2008 Proms Season and proved to be one of the hottest tickets that season.
The concert on 24 July is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and recorded for future broadcast on BBC Three.
BBC National Orchestra of Wales also performs at the Proms at The Royal Albert Hall on 22 & 26 July with the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer and with Associate Guest Conductor Francois Xavier Roth on 2 September.
The Orchestra will finish the Proms season at Proms in the Park at Singleton Park, Swansea when the season culminates with the famous Last Night of the Proms, with BBC Proms in the Park and Big Screen events across the UK.
The BBC Proms is the world’s largest classical music festival, with more than 90 concerts – featuring many of the world’s greatest artists and orchestras – and a host of extra events, including talks, workshops, films, free performances and family events.
The Proms runs from Friday 16 July to Saturday 11 September 2010, and full information on the season is available at bbc.co.uk/proms.
The BBC Proms presents a wide range of music and artists and is renowned for its low ticket prices. Highlights this year include a huge opening weekend with Mahler’s ‘Symphony of a Thousand’, Wagner’s The Mastersingers of Nuremberg with Bryn Terfel and Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra with Plácido Domingo. There are two starry Broadway Proms dedicated to the music of Stephen Sondheim and Rodgers & Hammerstein, and the hugely successful Doctor Who Prom returns. Featured artists include Paul Lewis – who plays all of Beethoven’s piano concertos – John Eliot Gardiner, Valery Gergiev, Sir Charles Mackerras and Sir Simon Rattle. Maria João Pires returns to the Proms after more than 10 years for an all-Chopin concert, while virtuoso violinist Nicola Benedetti, and jazz star Jamie Cullum make their Proms debuts.
The BBC Proms are broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and many are broadcast on BBC television (BBC Two and Four primarily, but also BBC Three and BBC HD), and all broadcasts are available via the BBC iPlayer for 7 days.
