Bonfire Night is fast approaching and Neath Port Talbot Council’s Trading Standards Officers are reminding people of the dangers of buying fireworks from rogue sellers.
This is a fun time of year but it can be dangerous. Officers are advising people not to be tempted to buy fireworks from door-to-door sellers, unofficial premises or from the back of vans as accidents can often occur as a result of poor quality, unsafe or counterfeit products.
Genuine fireworks must carry labelling that includes instructions for use, a minimum age limit and appropriate warnings.
Trading Standards will be cracking down on illegal sales in the run up to Bonfire Night; protecting genuine traders and consumer safety.
Leader of the Council Ali Thomas said, “We want everyone to have a safe and fun Bonfire Night, so don’t be tempted by cheaper products, as you could be putting your family at risk. Only buy fireworks from licensed retailers and follow all instructions carefully.”
Accidents can also occur through carelessness and misuse of fireworks so remember to read instructions carefully and buy the appropriate fireworks for the place you are going to set them off from. Only Category 1 fireworks are able to be used indoors or in confined spaces. You can use Category 2 fireworks in confined areas outside but may only use Category 3 products in large open areas.
Officers are encouraging anyone concerned about firework sales to get in touch. Consumers can contact Consumer Direct 0845 040506 and Traders can contact Trading Standards (01639) 685678.
