Police in Barry are urging householders to be on their guard against cold callers after two men purporting to be from SWALEC tried to gain access to the home of a 90 year old woman during the weekend. The men were not allowed into the property.
Barry Neighbourhood Inspector Louise Davies said: “It is extremely important for householders to ask for and check ID closely before allowing anybody into their homes.
“Just because someone says they are from a utility company and are wearing what looks like a uniform doesn’t mean that they are who they say they are,” she said. “Always check their identity card and if you are still in any doubt do not let them into your home no matter how convincing they are.
“Please be especially careful to examine thoroughly the identification of callers, particularly if there are road works taking place nearby. Our message is quite simply check the callers are who they say they are and if in doubt keep them out.”
Some helpful tips on preventing bogus caller crime include:
- Ensure that all doors are locked at all times even when at home; if you have one, always put the chain on before you open the door.
- Always ask to see an identification card, then ring the company concerned – not the number on the identification card – to check that the caller is genuine.
- If you are unsure, ask the caller to come back later when you have someone with you who can double check things for you.
- Never think you are being over cautious: it is always better to be safe than sorry.
- Remember bogus callers can come in all shapes & size – women, men, pairs and children.
- The risk of this crime happening to you is statistically a small one, but by following the steps above you can protect yourself very easily
Detective Chief Inspector Marc Lamerton said: “Anyone requiring a security survey of their home or business premises can contact South Wales Police or their local Community Safety partnership such as Safer Vale or Safer Bridgend. The survey and advice are free. On no account should anyone divulge any domestic security arrangements to a stranger.”
Anyone concerned by any caller, whether by phone or in person, should contact South Wales Police on 101. You should dial 999 if the person refuses to leave the premises and you feel threatened.”
