Be our guest on Broadway

The glitter, glitz and glamour or Broadway will transform Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus next week when Drama students perform their favourite extracts from Broadway musicals.

From classics such as Les Miserables to more contemporary productions like Avenue Q, The Lion King and Beauty & the Beast, the variety show promises to be a musical extravaganza not to be missed.

Seventeen year old Matthew J Westcott from Abertillery is really looking forward to next week’s performances:  “I don’t really get nervous so I’m just really excited to be on stage performing as it’s what I love!”

Matthew, who also sings in choirs including Only Boys Aloud, will be sad to leave Coleg Gwent next month but at the same time can’t wait to start his degree in drama, theatre and media at the University of Glamorgan’s Atrium in Cardiff in September:  “It’s been a fantastic two years and I’ve loved the opportunity to work with a great range of people with different skills, backgrounds and ambitions.  I’ll be doing two musical numbers from Joseph & His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat next week, plus I played a lead role in a recent production of Jekyll & Hyde which was a play so it’s been great to get such variety which will be really useful in my future career.”

Lecturer and Musical Director Emma Hughes says:  “The students have been working hard on this show since January and are looking forward to performing their huge variety of ensemble and solo pieces in the new theatre space at Crosskeys Campus.  The students have worked hard with not only me (Musical Director) and choreographer Kate Beames, but have also taken part in workshops with West End and cabaret performers, which have enhanced their experience and confidence.  We are also delighted that Martin Hodson will be returning to the fold to accompany us on the piano.”

Performance details: Tuesday 24 May 2.30pm – FREE and 7.15pm £4.  Wednesday 25 May 7.15pm £4.  Doors open 15 minutes prior to the performance.
