Caerphilly County Borough Council and McDonald’s have teamed up to spread the message that littering is selfish and unacceptable.
In recent weeks visitors to McDonald’s outlets across the county borough have been encouraged to sign a pledge agreeing that they will not drop litter and place all unwanted rubbish in the bin. The litter pledge initiative aims to tackle the issue of litter and over 300 people so far have signed up.
Littering is a crime and if caught an individual can face a fixed penalty notice for £75, this can be for dropping a cigarette butt, leftover food, food packaging or chewing gum. The council has the power to take repeat offenders to court as part of its mission to tackle persistent littering.
Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community & Leisure Services, said: “Any form of littering is unacceptable and I’m pleased that Caerphilly County Borough Council is working to tackle the rising issue of litter from fast food establishments. There is a clear message to those who are selfish and lazy enough to discard their litter wherever they want – use a bin provided or take your rubbish home with you, else you could face a £75 fixed penalty notice and possible legal action. I’m pleased to see so many people signing the pledge and helping to keep Caerphilly county borough a greener place to live.”
