Early indications from the WJEC of the outcomes of this year’s GCSE examinations indicate that pupils in Cardiff have made very good progress again this year, producing their best ever results.
The percentage of grades A*-G awarded remained for the second year at 98.1 per cent; the high point achieved in 2009. The percentage achieving the higher grades A*-C in Cardiff, at 68.2 per cent, was 1.6 per cent better than in 2009, moving further ahead of the all-Wales figures.
Over a fifth of the grades awarded were the highest grades (A*/A) with the percentage in Cardiff of 21.9 per cent being the best ever recorded now being 2.7 per cent ahead of the all-Wales figure.
Councillor Freda Salway, Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “I look forward every year to receiving the GCSE examination results because it gives me the opportunity to praise the effort, hard work and commitment put in by the pupils and their teachers. It seems that 2010 will prove to be our strongest performance yet and so I am delighted to congratulate all our young people on these excellent results. We are committed to ensuring that everyone, whatever their starting point, has the opportunity to succeed during their time in school. As we celebrate the successes of our pupils and their families, on behalf of the Council, I wish them all the very best for their future achievements in education or training post 16.”
Chris Jones, Chief Schools and Lifelong Learning Officer, said: “These early results suggest the grades awarded in 2010 will be Cardiff’s best ever. These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of pupils and teachers alike and bode well for the continuing improvements in standards we are committed to achieving on behalf of all our young people”.
