Bridgend County Borough Council’s Trading Standards team is warning residents to beware of bogus websites when shopping online.
Reports have been received of consumers purchasing products from seemingly legitimate websites but not receiving the goods. These have included televisions costing £300 as well as brand name hair straightening products.
Consumers should be especially cautious when buying goods from websites if the price seems to be very cheap. Many of these websites operate in the Far East, particularly China, and if the goods are not received it becomes extremely difficult to pursue these rogue sellers.
Helen Picton, Service Manager for Trading Standards, has plenty of tips for online shoppers seeking a bargain: “When purchasing from a website, we would strongly recommend that you check the contact details for the business. If you cannot find a UK based address then there is a strong possibility that the website will not originate in this country. Obtaining refunds from traders outside the UK can often be a difficult task.
“These websites often advertise very competitive prices, which lures consumers to make purchases in the belief that they’ve found a bargain. However, if the price sounds too good to be true it probably is, and by providing your payment details on these websites you may even find yourself the victim of identity fraud and could end up losing much more than the goods you’ve ordered.”
