Bid for additional harbour development funds approved

Denbighshire County Council has agreed (Tuesday) to allocate an additional £500k towards the Foryd Harbour Project.

The decision was taken after a report discussed by councillors revealed that the project costs had increased to £9.9 million and that a further investment was needed by Denbighshire County Council to secure the future of the project.

The Foryd Harbour Project is part of a wider Physical Regeneration Programme for North Wales, which is primarily funded through the Welsh European Funding Office and the Welsh Government.

The new facilities at the Foryd Harbour will include an iconic pedestrian and cycle bridge and associated works to link the coastal footpath; new quay walls; a public square and the provision of a quayside building.

Councillor Julian Thompson-Hill, Cabinet Lead Member for Finance, said: “The costs have risen due to considerable design challenges but we recognise that this is a key strategic project in the regeneration of Rhyl.”

“We have consulted widely on the proposals over recent years and the project will provide an attractive working harbour and tourist destination to the West of Rhyl.

“The visible support of the Council in the harbour project will help build confidence to attract further private sector investment; this is vital to support further redevelopment in  the town.”
