A host of volunteers have taken part in events across Caerphilly County Borough during the council’s Big Spring Clean campaign, collecting nearly 50 tonnes of litter and fly tipped waste.

The Big Spring Clean is an annual campaign encouraging the local community to join together to improve the local environment and make Caerphilly County Borough a more attractive and pleasant place to live, work and visit.

Events have taken place throughout March, April and May across the county borough, adding to the daily frontline maintenance work that the council undertakes throughout the year.

Roads have been resurfaced, drains have been cleared, street furniture has been painted, community facilities have been given a new lease of life with artwork, flowers and shrubs have been planted and volunteers and council staff have collected an approximate total of 47 tonnes of litter and waste.

Local residents, councillors, school children and the council’s Cleansing and Tidy Towns Teams have been working hard during the last week of the campaign, improving the look and feel of Caerphilly County Borough.

The last few weeks have seen a number of events take place as the campaign draws to a close. Pupils from Fochriw Primary School took part in a litter pick and clean up around their community and collected over 30 bags of rubbish and local resident Liz Neumann-Cottrell has collected an amazing 33 bags of rubbish during this clean up initiative.

Cllr Poole thanked everyone who has been involved during the campaign and encouraged residents to continue looking after their environment throughout the year.  He said, “This year’s campaign has helped to improve areas that are off the beaten track as well as a number of areas that have been highlighted by local residents.    To date we have amassed almost 50 tonnes of waste and litter which have been gathered up for disposal or recycling.  I would like to thank all those groups and individuals who have helped to make this campaign a success and particularly the Council’s Tidy Towns Team.”
