Blaenau Gwent Council is fighting back against dog owners who don’t pick up after their pets.
The local authority has teamed up with Gwent Police to catch those owners that don’t pick up and hit them where it hurts most – in the pocket!
Local people are telling us that they are fed up with dog owners not bothering to clean up after their pets and that they see it as a priority issue in their communities.
The Council together with Police Community Support Officers is issuing more fixed penalty notices of £75; increasing patrols and surveillance in problem areas and sending out letters to homes in problem areas.
There are over 300 clearly marked dog bins around the county borough and the Council has plans to erect more. The Council also supplies free dog bags.
Councillor John Hopkins, Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Crime and Disorder and Safer Communities says:
“It is both irresponsible and illegal for dog owners to let their pets foul their local community. Not only is it offensive, it can also dangerous for children and adults if they come into contact with dog faeces. If we catch you not picking up, you will pay the penalty.”
There are Gwent Police PCSOs in every ward in Blaenau Gwent. Sergeant Angela Burt, of Abertillery Neighbourhood Policing Team says: “Dog fouling is the blight of many a street and we are aiming to change people’s way of thinking. Most pet owners are responsible and considerate, but there are a few that give no thought to the rest of the community and it’s those people we will target.”
Free dog bags are available from the Civic Centre in Ebbw Vale; Blaina Communities First office; Cwm Communities First office; Abertillery Library; Abertillery Police Station; Abertillery Communities First office or the Central Deopt in Brynmawr.
To report dog fouling issues call Blaenau Gwent Council’s Contact Centre C2BG on 01495 311556 and ask for Environmental Health.
