Cardiff may be familiar with the whole blues v red debate when it comes to football, but at Cardiff Castle’s Joust event on Saturday June 21 & Sunday June 22, visitors will be asked to nail their colours firmly to the mast.
Ready to do battle, The Knights of Royal England will thunder into the Castle grounds. Heading Team Red is Sir Jasper and Sir Steven with Sir Sam and Lord Ashley playing for Team Blue.
Sir Jasper is the reigning champion and leader of the Red Team. A great horseman who enjoys mastering a wild and troublesome steed, he will ride Centuro, his Andalusian stallion. A veteran of 70 tournaments a year since the age of 19, his experience and skill shines through. The similarly experienced, if not slightly reckless Sir Stephen is back after injury, for jousting is a dangerous game, and the thrills and spill are for real. Expect some devious antics and cutting quips.
And on the Blue team is Sir Sam, a force to be reckoned with who won’t back down from the challenge. The young Sir Sam looks to shake off the growing pains of inexperience and bravely lead the charge. The ladies favourite, Lord Ashley is an icy competitor who loves to win. Very dangerous and very experienced, his sword skills are second to none.
So it will be a close contest, and if you want to know the score, you will need to be there! Are you a blue or red?
Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “It is a great family weekend. Added to all the action in the Joust arena, is storytelling, junior jousting skills, dragon processions and a medieval encampment to explore.”
Joust is the opening event of Cardiff Festival www.cardiff-festival.com.
