Denbighshire County Council held a very successful consultation session in Bodelwyddan on Thursday, 17 February to discuss the draft Community Linguistic Impact Assessment document.
Around 80 local residents came along to discuss the potential impacts of development on local Welsh language and culture. Residents were asked what they thought were the key features of Welsh language and culture in the area; how these might be affected by development and what could be done to minimise and negative impacts and promote positive ones.
The event was jointly hosted by Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych who asked what opportunities or types of events local people wanted to see. Suggestions made included more Welsh language and history classes, local businesses and services to promote the language more, and greater involvement of the school with the Urdd and the Eisteddfodau.
Gill Stephen from Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych said of the event, “It was extremely encouraging to see how many people took the trouble to call in to offer their interesting and constructive ideas about how to ensure a secure future for the Welsh language and culture in Bodelwyddan.”
The consultation runs until 9 March 2011 and copies of the Community Linguistic Impact Assessment document can be found in local libraries, One Stop Shops and on the Denbighshire website.
