A grenn-fingered gardener from Pontarddulais has scooped a blooming marvellous award.
Jayne Richards, of Maes Teg, has won top prize in Swansea Council’s tenants and leaseholders gardening competition.
She received a cash prize and a commemorative plaque from Swansea Lord Mayor Alan Lloyd in a plush ceremony at the George Hall where she was joined by other winners of this competition and those of the Swansea In Bloom competition.
This is the first time Jayne has won the overall prize. She’s entered the competition for the last five years and has won the area prize on several occasions in the past.
Ms Richards was helped by partner Andrew Taylor and opened her garden to the public along with neighbour Sylvia Killa to raise money for charity.
They together raised £1,480 for the Rachel Waters Remembrance Fund in aid of the Welsh Air Ambulance and the Llanelli Breat Care Centre with support from the residents and shopkeepers of Pontarddulais.
Jayne said: “I’m delighted to have won the top prize and it’s thrilling that the judges appreciated the effort I put into my garden.
“I’d also like to thank all those who attended and supported the open day because we’ve raised some money for some very worthy causes.”
The Tenants and Leaseholders Gardening Competition is now in its 10th year and received a record number of entrants this year.
Cllr Peter May, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “The competition has once again proved to be very successful and the quality of the entrants this year was excellent.
“I’d like to congratulate Jayne Richards and the rest of the winners on their efforts because they should be very proud of their achievements. A big thank you also goes out to all those who entered the competition.”
