Bonus point win for Scarlets

Sean Lamont scored a brace, but Wales fly-half Stephen Jones hobbled off after 17 minutes as the Scarlets took a bonus point victory over Italian side Benetton Treviso in the Heineken Cup.

Jones damaged his knee in a tackle and the Scarlets must now wait on further medical assessment before knowing the full extent of the damage.

“Stephen took a knock to his knee but it will take 24 to 48 hours to get an accurate assessment. It looks like a tweak to his knee ligament,” said Scarlets head coach Nigel Davies.

“It was imperative that we had the win and the bonus-point was very important.

“We’ve done that which was great but we also realise the performance wasn’t great. Next week will be another big challenge.”

Lamont opened the scoring after just 60 seconds to give his side the ideal start.

The powerful winger broke through the defence to touchdown, rounding off Regan King’s initial break. Jones added the extra’s and then helped himself to another three points with a penalty five minutes later.

Jones’ opposite number Kris Burton struck back for the Italians, kicking a penalty four minutes later and then a drop goal.

Treviso, who took the Welsh side’s scalp in the Magners League earlier in the season then took the lead for the first time with Gonzalo Garcia powering over for a converted try.

With Jones off, Rhys Priestland moved to fly-half and he then combined with Regan King on the switch to send the former All Black under the posts.

Priestland kicked the conversion before adding two penalties to give the Scarlets a 23-13 lead at the interval.

Josh Turnball got an early second half score for the West Wales side touching down after Gareth Maule had charged down a Treviso clearance.

Just as the Scarlets built up some breathing space, Treviso hit back. Burton teased the Scarlets defence as he made his way to the line before off loading to Tomas Benvenuti to score.

Five minutes later they were at it again when Semenzato sniped over on the blind-side, Burton brilliantly converted from the touchline to bring the plucky visitors to within three points of the lead.

But the Italian minnows’ hopes were dashed when Lamont smashed his way over for his second try shortly before the hour mark to seal the win.
