Following the tragic death of Gary Speed, a Book of Remembrance is to be placed in County Hall, Mold.
Flintshire County Council and the Football Association of Wales have worked together, to ensure that a Book of Remembrance will be available in Flintshire, Gary’s home county. There are also Books of Remembrance at the FAW offices in Cardiff and at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham.
Gary was born in Flintshire, in Mancot, and attended the county’s Hawarden High School. As a boy, he played for Deeside primary schools.
He was the first footballer ever to reach 500 Premiership appearances, and played for Everton, Newcastle, Leeds, Bolton and Sheffield United.
He represented his country 85 times, and was the manager of Wales when he died.
Flintshire residents wishing to pay their respects can sign the book, which will be available from this Thursday, 8 December, in the main reception at County Hall during office hours, which are 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Colin Everett, Chief Executive of Flintshire County Council, said:
“The communities of Flintshire are all very proud of Gary’s achievements, from being a footballer to a manager. He has been a role model and a mentor for others. We all share in the grief of his family, and of the Welsh public.”
